Offa's Dyke Path brings BBC back to Knighton

At Knighton’s Offa’s Dyke Centre this week [29 Jun-2 Jul] was BBC Radio 4, up from London to make a programme for their “Lives in the Landscape” documentary series. Producer Sara Jane Hall discovered the town last year, when walking the Offa’s Dyke Path, and decided she must come back and make a programme about it. Of course she started by contacting the Offa’s Dyke Centre, where staff used their local knowledge to put her in touch with interesting characters from all walks of life in and around the town. On Thursday morning Sara Jane and presenter Alan Dein attended the stock market with local farmer Russell Davies. Here they also met Auctioneer Glyn Owen and were served tea in the farmers’ canteen by veteran caterer Gwenn Evans of Knucklas. The broadcasters then took a stroll through the town to the Offa’s Dyke Centre where they met the Enid Davies and Jim Saunders of the Offa’s Dyke Association. Jim introduced them the section of Dyke in the riverside park and told them a little about the history of the Offa’s Dyke Path coming to Knighton. Finally Sara Jane recorded a solid minute of rural tranquility in Pinner’s Hole to take back with her to the noise and bustle of London W1.

“Lives in the landscape” is due for broadcast in November.
